My Burden is Light |

Like my piece New Life, this picture was done as my contribution to a series of artworks based around the stations of the cross. The artworks have were done by artists from the Northwood area and were displayed in various local venues in the weeks around Easter 2010. This piece is inspired by the station "Simon helps Jesus carry the cross".

''I am the light of the world''. So says Jesus in  John 8v12. But in Matthew 5v14 he says to his followers, ''You are the light of the world''. It seems this is a shared burden... ''Let your light shine before men that they will see your good deeds and praise your father in heaven.''

But the world seems to be getting on fine making its own light, it's not really a very dark place. Even where the sun goes down, electricity flows, sodium burns and neon glows. The night time streets shine colourful and bright. Sometimes it's with a light bourne by lucifer; the seedier parts of Soho are happy to make light of their darker side. But many of the signs in my picture come from bars, restaurants, cinemas and theatres. Eat, drink and be merry, they say, for tomorrow we die!

Perhaps the light of Easter shines just that little bit brighter, able to guide us, not just through the shadows of today and tonight, but into the unknown of a dark tomorrow.
